WNIN-Isaiah Seibert

WNIN, Evansville, Metro Division

Best Reporter, Isaiah Seibert

It is my pleasure to enter the work of WNIN reporter Isaiah Seibert in the Indiana AP contest. Isaiah has quickly established himself as one of the best of a new generation of journalists. His work will likely be heard on many outlets in the years to come.

In addition to reporting several statewide and national stories this year, Isaiah is WNIN’s reporter for the Side Effects regional health reporting cooperative. He also was a significant contributor to an investigation that won several state, regional and national awards in 2018.

This entry shows a reporter with a highly developed skill set.  His writing is crisp, his storytelling thoughtful and engaging. He is fast- really fast- at turning news of the day and spot stories, while at the same time making them interesting to our listeners. It is not unusual for him to have a draft ready for editing within minutes of arriving back at the station from the field.

We hope you enjoy this entry and ask for your support for the high honor of an Associated Press award.

Entry rundown:

:00-2:19  Breaking news. Isaiah was called out on a Sunday night to cover a train derailment and explosion that prompted an evacuation in Princeton, about thirty miles north of Evansville. He covered the story through the night, filing for WNIN, IPBS and NPR. Then, he followed the story closely for several months, including breaking the news of a preliminary finding on the cause of the accident.

2:20-5:27- Continuing Coverage. Isaiah first broke the story of a federal lawsuit against a University of Evansville theater department professor alleging racial and sexual harassment. Since breaking the story, he has followed it closely, often being the first reporter with new information on this highly competitive story in our market.

5:30-10:30- Beat coverage and general reporting. These ‘news of the day’ reports showcase the extent of Isaiah’s skill in handling multiple types of assignments. His speed in production and writing skill make him a great asset to our news organization.

10:25-14:05- Feature.  His segment on a group of mostly non-Jewish musicians who have prompted a resurgence in attendance at a local synagogue is funny, heart-warming and educational
